Since I got a few requests to see the video after it was featured on DeviantArt.com's Daily Devations, I figured I would fast-track it onto the interweb. So here it is, the making of the Bear Warrior. Done in Photoshop with a heavy use of the natural media brushes. Read more about the development of this piece in my blog post: [link]

Hey dude hope you don't mind me asking, ! was wondering how do you go about doing landscape studies? It's a question I can't accurately ask. like what's your technique? how do you build up your colours?

I don't know, I feel at the moment in terms of digitally painting a landscape it's not just a case of practice practice practice. I think There's a method involved.
Like block in your colours without using a opacity brush, or line up the picture first.
I don't know man, this could just be a pointless question to ask and I should just shutupanddraw...hmmmmm..
Just..Painting a character and then painting a background. I was under the impression i could just transfer my skill to backgrounds but they are two different things entirely at this moment in time.

I suppose what I really want to ask is. How did you get better at doing backgrounds? *besides practice practice pratice* was there a moment when something just clicked? like "ahh, first i must do this, then this, than that goes over there.." lol ughh

No don't mind at all. Though I don't know if I have a great answer. There is never an easy way to get better. Sadly the best advice would be just to do it over and over. Don't be afraid of color, or little opacity, or of making mistakes. I've heard it said that you'll do 200 terrible paintings before you do a good one. Also my high school art teacher would always tell his students to "draw what you see". Seems like simple advice, but it's what needs to be done.

Also, I'm not the best at environments. It's one area where I really want to improve myself. Check out Noah Bradley's stuff [link] he has some great environment work. Also his livestream has some cool stuff of him just working. Maybe you could learn some stuff from just watching him work. [link]

Anyway, I hope that helps.

Thank you so much for this! I've managed to pick myself back up again and agree 100% it's practice practice practice..and experimentation lol.

Thank you for taking the time out to respond, it means a lot. Hope you're well
